From the successful range of historic race cars, this 1966 Daytona competitor joins the stable of over twenty Scalextric GT40 cars and fills an important historic place in the history of GT40 cars. Our extensive Le Mans issues are now balanced with the Daytona car driven by Donahue and Hansgen.
History
The Ford GT40 MKII, chassis P1031, was sold to Carroll Shelby and prepared for the 1966 Daytona 24-Hour in February where it finished 3rd raced by Holman & Moody team by drivers Walt Hansgen and Mark Donohue.
The #95 car ran as high as second for most of the race, but Ford team orders forced them to fall back to third where they finished the race making it an all GT40 podium with Miles/Ruby in first and Gurney/Grant in second. A fourth GT40 Mk II driven by McLaren/Amon finished in fifth overall.
In 1966 the Holman Moody Ford GT MKII also raced at Sebring and finished second liveried in blue, race no.2 (see Scalextric release C3066). One of the most famous liveries for this car was seen at Le Mans in 1966 in dark blue with yellow nose detail, driven by the legendary Mario Andretti (see Scalextric release C3097). This car also raced in light blue and red liveries during its race career.
Parts of P1031 and P1047 were used to make one car out of the two - now known as P1031/1047.
