Monogram Greenwood Vette Review

7/07/04

 The Monogram Greenwood Corvette

Well fellow slot racers, this is my first review for Fantasy World Hobbies, so bear with me! I know most of you have talked to me on the phone and have asked me tech questions or just to chat. I'm enjoying the good conversations with all of you. So...here we go...

The Monogram Corvette "1976 Spirit of Sebring" and "The Greenwood Riverside 1975" run very well "right out of the box". As do the other Monogram slot cars. I put it on my 78' layout and was very surprised how quiet it ran, (no oil or lube yet) due to the nylon pinion and crown gear.

Looking at the chassis, similar to the other front motor Monogram slot cars, I lubed the front & rear brass axle bushings and the motor drive shaft bushing.

I then put the Vette chassis on my tech table and ran the car with low voltage (6 volts).  I noticed a little vibration from the drive shaft bushing - due to it spinning in the chassis. I used some hot glue to stop the bushing from spinning in the chassis. Hot glue works just as well as super glue, but you can peel it off, if needed. I also trued the rear tires with some sand paper (200 grit) or whatever you have!

I put the car on my 78' Scalextric classic layout. (You can see my layout on our website in the Photo Gallery, fourth page - The Hillsdale Raceway. Yes, that's mine!)

The Vette runs very smooth and quiet. I was very amazed at its performance. I ran the Vette on my outside lane first.

Track time:

  • Red (4) Lane: 6.70 seconds (outside lanes)

  • Blue (3) Lane: 6.55 seconds (middle lanes )

  • White (2) Lane: 6.50 seconds (middle lanes)

  • Yellow (1) Lane: 6.67 seconds (inside lanes)

I ran the magnet in the rear position.

The Vette runs a little quicker than the other Monogram slot cars, maybe due to the sticky and wider rear tire.

Monogram also provides some hop-up kits. Such as:

  • A magnet set, part number REV5115

  • A stronger motor, part number REV5113 (I don't know the RPM of this, but I would think it is around 23,000+ RPM. )

  • A gear and pinion, set part number REV5120

  • A weight set, part number REV5166.

The Monogram Vette chassis, like the other Monogram cars, has a magnet pocket that is easily removed by two clips from inside the chassis. To do this, you can snap the clip with a flat screwdriver to remove the magnet or to add another magnet or weight, for example, and it will easily snap back into position.

For all you magnet junkies, you can glue a stronger magnet in the front of the chassis behind the flag, if you want to give it the stuck down feel.

(I mostly run box stock with minor tweaks.)

I hope this helps!
